Salaam Program
>> facilitating intercultural exchange between the U.S. and the Arab world

salaam (Arabic: السلام), noun
Definition of salaam: peace
The events of September 11th 2001 forever changed the landscape of today's globalized world.  Suddenly, Americans and Westerners everywhere started questioning the essence of the Arab world.  What motivated these individuals to commit such heinous crimes?  How much does the event of 9/11 represent the views of the Arab world?

Many individuals - from the Western and the Arab world - sought to capitalize on this event in order to further their own motives.  Espousing nationalistic, religious, and cultural rhetoric, these individuals sought to divide - instead of unite - different groups.
AIESEC United States has decided to take on the initiative to change the misconceptions on both sides by organizing an exclusive partnership with the AIESEC chapters in the Middle East/North Africa region.  At a time when politics, religion, and culture are intertwined in our discussions of global issues - it is essential for today's youth to experience first-hand the societies in question.   We believe in creating an environment where young people can share with their peers their stories - their true identities - instead of relying on polarized debates on one's nation, religion, or culture.

We believe that by facilitating intercultural dialogue, we will be planting the seeds of peace between the West and the Arab world.

On September 11th 2003, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, AIESEC United States launched the Salaam Program, which aims to increase exchanges between the U.S. and the Arab world.  The program has been a great success and has currently realized over 140 internships.

Today, the Salaam Program operates in 8 countries in the Middle East/North Africa region: Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.

This is the opportunity for you to step outside of your comfort zone and immerse yourself in a different culture.  Worldviews are going to be challenged.  Barriers are going to be broken.
